New York Socially and Economically Disadvantaged Farmer Grant Program (LAND Project)

The Socially and Economically Disadvantaged Farmer Grant Program, offered under the name the Landing Access: Novel Directions (LAND) Project, assists farmers who face disproportionate barriers to success due to discrimination. It provides funding for projects such as the start-up, improvement, or expansion of a farm operation; the purchase of agricultural land and physical structures; the purchase of machinery, equipment, or livestock; worker or staff training; and marketing activities. The program is administered by the Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust (NEFOC).

For-profit business owners who experience discrimination by virtue of their membership in a particular group and whose ability to enter into farming or the success of their farm enterprise has been impaired.

Total program funding is $3.4 million. Awards in the first round were capped at $5,000; subsequent rounds offer awards of up to $250,000, based on project complexity.

Tiers (Round 2 posting): Tier 1 $10,000; Tier 2 $10,000–$50,000; Tier 3 $20,000–$100,000; Tier 4 (land acquisition / down-payment assistance) amount TBD. Every applicant matches 5% of funds requested (cash or in-kind); reimbursement basis.
