North Carolina specialty crop growers can receive up to $2,450 to make health and&#x2004;safety improvements. The program is run by the North Carolina Agromedicine Institute, a partnership of East Carolina University, NC State University, and NC A&T State University. Funds and supplies are limited and available until exhausted. Improvements may include:

- Installation of plexiglass or other temporary barriers 

- Portable hand washing or field sanitation stations 

- Ventilation/air filtration upgrades or similar portable type systems

- Smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, first aid kits

- Replacement of mattresses/mattress covers for migrant housing

- Fee-for-service to clean/sanitize congregate housing, work sites and/or transportation

Specialty crop producers in North Carolina as defined by the USDA are eligible.
Priority will be given to producers who:
- Are veterans, women, and/or individuals farming with a disability
- Have operated a farm for less than 10 years.
- Are defined by the USDA as "Socially Disadvantaged" (including African Americans, American Indians or Alaskan natives, Hispanics, and Asians or Pacific Islanders).
- Have low gross farm sales (<$180,300) and low household income for 2 years in a row.

A lump sum of money for a specific purpose that does not need to be paid back.

This grant is reimbursement based, with a 30% cost-share required. Original receipts are required. Maximum project expenditure of $3,500 would generate a maximum reimbursement of $2,450.
