Access Yes! pays willing Idaho landowners who open their private land, or access across it to public land, for public hunting and fishing. About 328,000 private acres were enrolled as of August 2026. Deadline text on the page: Notify Fish and Game within 72 hours of discovering damage is occurring; provide written notification within 20 days; claim filed in the fiscal year (July 1–June 30) the damage occurs, with a 60-day allowance after year-end.

Idaho Fish and Game helps farmers and ranchers prevent big game damage by providing fencing, gates and panels, hazing help, depredation hunts, and crop agreements that pay landowners to let wildlife use their crops. When prevention fails, eligible landowners can be compensated for crops and rangeland forage damaged by deer, elk, pronghorn or moose, livestock killed by black bears, mountain lions or delisted grizzlies, bee/berry losses, and damaged seedbeds or irrigation equipment.

- Notify Fish and Game within 72 hours of discovering damage; written notice within 20 days
- Have allowed reasonable access for hunters
- Loss of at least $750
- Must take reasonable steps to prevent damage first
- Compensation cannot be in addition to commodity insurance for the same loss

A lump sum of money for a specific purpose that does not need to be paid back.

Grant

Disputed amounts go to a 3-member arbitration panel. Payments may be prorated if the depredation account is short.

Published amounts: Compensated for the amount of damages minus a deductible ($750 for crops and $750 for livestock), waived for repeat similar claims in the same location; up to half paid within 45 days of approval, remainder after June 30 if funds are available. Must have suffered loss of at least $750.

Begin by making a request to the habitat biologist at the nearest Fish and Game office; the biologist assesses the land and plans the project.

HIP is Idaho Fish and Game's cost-share program for private landowners and public land managers who want to improve habitat for upland game birds and waterfowl. It pays for things like nesting cover, windbreaks, food plots, fencing livestock out of woody cover, and creating or restoring wetlands. Landowners are generally reimbursed up to 75% of costs, up to $10,000 per project, under an agreement that usually runs at least 10 years.

- Private landowners and public land managers in Idaho
- Projects must enhance upland game bird or waterfowl habitat
- Fee hunting not allowed on lands under a HIP contract; not available for shooting preserves

A payment that requires some percentage of matching contributions by the recipient.

Cost Share

Cooperative agreement and project plan; landowner usually maintains the project at least 10 years (food plots 1–2 years, up to 5 for perennial plots). Agreement can be terminated if the cooperator returns all cost-share funds. Multi-year maintenance funding depends on annual appropriations.

Published amounts: On approved projects, landowners are generally reimbursed up to 75% of out-of-pocket expenses with a general limit of $10,000 per project. Guidelines: 50% on wetland projects; 100% on quail condos and on all 30+ year agreements; 100% if project lands are enrolled in Access Yes for 5 years; food plots up to $250/acre first year and $120/acre maintenance; $20/acre to leave grain stubble ($2,000/operation max); delayed mowing up to $2,000.
