Farm Aid's annual grantmaking runs on a cycle: invited organizations receive applications in the summer and awards are announced in November–December. Farm Aid does not fund individual farmers. Each year, proceeds from Farm Aid's annual festival and its community of donors are granted to IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations working to strengthen family-farm agriculture in the United States. Since its first concert in 1985, Farm Aid has granted more than $32 million to over 300 organizations nationwide. Grantmaking focuses on three&#x2004;funding areas: (1) building local and regional food systems that connect family farmers directly with consumers; (2) providing family farmers with support and resources to start farming, transition to more sustainable practices, and continue farming through financial crises and natural disasters; and (3) promoting fair farm policies and organizing grassroots campaigns to defend and bolster family-farm agriculture. Cross-cutting priorities include racial equity, farmer-led solutions to climate change, curbing industrial/corporate consolidation in agriculture, and support for farmers experiencing crisis and farm stress.

Applicants are IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations (or organizations with a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor) that serve family farmers in the United States within one of Farm Aid's three funding areas. Per IRS regulations, Farm Aid cannot provide grants or loans to individual farmers or for the commercial operation of a farm; grants to individuals and to nonprofits without 501(c)(3) status (or a qualifying fiscal sponsor) are ineligible.

Grants are awarded annually across three funding areas. In 2025, Farm Aid granted approximately $1.3 million to 106 organizations; typical awards range from about $5,000 to $10,000. More than $32 million has been granted to over 300 organizations since 1985.

As farmers and&#x2004;ranchers in the Southeast deal with the historic impact of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, Farm Aid has activated its Family Farm Disaster Fund to provide immediate aid to family farmers in the affected regions. Chipotle made the first major donation to the Family Farm Disaster Fund, in the amount of $250,000.


For nearly four decades, Farm Aid has stepped in quickly after natural disasters to assist farmers and ranchers. Catastrophic rainfall, flooding and wind damage from these hurricanes have wreaked havoc on farmers who already struggle with the many challenges of agriculture that lead to financial, legal and emotional stress. Farm Aid’s hurricane relief efforts will focus on family farmers and ranchers who have lost their barns, livestock, crops, fields, pasture and other essential farm infrastructure. Farm Aid will also support farmers who were spared major damage but suffered economic losses due to closures of grocery stores, restaurants, farmers markets and other outlets.

No eligibility criteria are published, and there is no application form. Farm Aid describes the audience only in general terms: the fund exists "to help farm families recover from weather-related disasters," and relief focuses on "the family farmers and ranchers who have lost their barns, livestock, crops, pasture and other essentials" — plus farmers who escaped physical damage but lost income when grocery stores, restaurants and farmers markets closed.

Your next step is the hotline, not an application: "Answering the 1-800-FARM-AID hotline" is the front door, and "When you contact Farm Aid, our goal is to connect you with helpful services, resources and opportunities specific to your individual needs." Storm-affected farmers are also pointed to a running list of available resources and to Farm Aid's Farmer Resource Network.

Because the money moves through partners, whether you receive anything is decided case by case rather than against a posted test. Farm Aid provides "emergency funds to farm families for family household and medical expenses. Coordinating with churches and farm service organizations operating in the disaster region, Farm Aid responds quickly to ensure that the money goes to farm families most in need." It also grants to regional farm organizations that in turn make emergency grants to farm and ranch families.

Two things the source does not say, so do not assume them: no farm-size, income, acreage or commodity test is published anywhere; and the evergreen Family Farm Disaster Fund page publishes no state list at all — the states recorded here reflect the 2024 Hurricane Helene and Milton response, not a standing geographic limit. If you have been hit by a weather disaster, call the hotline and ask, whatever state you farm in.

No award amount, cap, or per-farm grant size is published, and there is no application form. The fund publishes only how the money moves: "One hundred percent of every dollar raised for the Family Farm Disaster Fund will go directly to work for family farmers who need it now."

Aid is delivered two ways rather than as a posted grant with terms:

- Direct emergency household aid, routed through local partners: "Providing emergency funds to farm families for family household and medical expenses. Coordinating with churches and farm service organizations operating in the disaster region, Farm Aid responds quickly to ensure that the money goes to farm families most in need."
- Grants to regional farm organizations that in turn "Make emergency grants to farm and ranch families," help farmers understand recovery options, and fund local farm service providers.

Note the scope: relief "will focus on the family farmers and ranchers who have lost their barns, livestock, crops, pasture and other essentials," and Farm Aid also supports farmers who avoided physical damage but lost income when markets and outlets closed.

How to reach it: the 1-800-FARM-AID hotline and the Farmer Resource Network — not a grant portal. Also note that the $250,000 recorded against this program was a one-time Chipotle donation to the fund after the 2024 hurricanes, not an ongoing pot or a per-recipient figure.
