DFA general inquiries

Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), a national dairy cooperative owned by 9,000 farmer-owners, has been awarded up to $46 million from USDA's Advancing Markets for Producers (AMP) program. Through this multi-year voluntary program, DFA will partner with its farmer-owners to accelerate the adoption of conservation practices that align with customer expectations and marketplace demands.

DFA says the grant is especially meaningful for small farms that are interested in conservation practices and can benefit from extra resources to put them in place. Participation runs through DFA and is for DFA farmer-owners.

You must be a DFA farmer-owner. This project runs inside a cooperative, not through a public application: "Through this multi-year voluntary program, DFA will partner with farmer-owners to accelerate the adoption of conservation practices that align with evolving customer expectations and marketplace demands." DFA describes itself as "a national dairy cooperative owned by 9,000 farmer-owners." If you are not a DFA member, nothing here is open to you.

Beyond membership, no eligibility criteria are published at all — no practice list, no herd-size or acreage threshold, no income test, no state or region limits within DFA's footprint, no application, no deadline, and no sign-up route. An exhaustive pass over DFA's press release plus its sustainability, responsible-farming and farmer-owner programs-and-benefits pages found no enrollment, interest-form or application path of any kind.

Stated priority, but not a restriction: small farms. "This grant is especially meaningful for small farms, many of which are interested in conservation practices and can benefit from additional resources to make implementation more accessible," and USDA "is helping remove barriers and opening the door for more producers to participate in stewardship efforts they may not otherwise have had the opportunity to pursue." No size definition or cutoff is given, and nothing says larger farms are excluded.

The $46 million figure is DFA's own federal award ("awarded up to $46 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Advancing Markets for Producers (AMP) program"), not a per-farm amount and not an eligibility threshold.

Your actual next step: as a DFA farmer-owner, ask your field or member representative, or check the member-only myDFA portal — that is the only route published or implied. Participation is voluntary.

A lump sum of money for a specific purpose that does not need to be paid back.

No per-farm payment rate, incentive amount, cost-share percentage, or cap is published anywhere by DFA or USDA for this project. The only figure DFA publishes is the size of its own federal award, which is not what a farmer receives: "Dairy Farmers of America (DFA)... has been awarded up to $46 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Advancing Markets for Producers (AMP) program."

What DFA does describe, without numbers:
- "Through this multi-year voluntary program, DFA will partner with farmer-owners to accelerate the adoption of conservation practices that align with evolving customer expectations and marketplace demands."
- "By designating funding to support conservation practices on farms, USDA is helping remove barriers and opening the door for more producers to participate in stewardship efforts they may not otherwise have had the opportunity to pursue."
- Small farms are the stated priority: "This grant is especially meaningful for small farms, many of which are interested in conservation practices and can benefit from additional resources to make implementation more accessible."

There is also no public enrollment path. An exhaustive pass over DFA's press release and its sustainability, responsible-farming and farmer-owner programs-and-benefits pages found no application, sign-up, interest form or enrollment route, and no practice list. Participation appears to run through DFA membership channels — if you are a DFA farmer-owner, your field or member representative, or the myDFA portal, is the place to ask what the practice payments actually are. If you are not a DFA member, this project is not open to you.

So: real money, real project, but a farmer cannot currently learn from any published source what they would be paid or how to sign up.

Apply online through the DFA Careers students page (careers.dfamilk.com/students) when the application period opens; the 2027 cycle opens in late 2026.

Deadline text on the page: The application period for 2027 scholarships will open in late 2026. (Prior cycle: The application window is open now through Friday, January 9, 2026.)
