North Dakota Drought Disaster Livestock Water Supply Project Assistance Program
North Dakota Department of Water Resources
Closed October 28, 2026
North Dakota law, under NDAC Section 89-11, provides the Department of Water Resources with the ability to provide cost-share assistance to livestock producers experiencing water supply shortages caused by drought.
The Drought Disaster Livestock Water Supply Project Assistance Program (Program) provides cost-share assistance to livestock producers with water supply shortages caused by drought. Eligible items include: new water wells, rural water system connections, pipeline extensions, pasture taps, and associated works, labor, materials, and equipment rentals for work completed to develop new water supply projects.
The State Water Commission approved a total of $4 million for eligible livestock water supply projects following the program's reactivation on August 18, 2026. The program was expanded to include eligible producers in all 53 North Dakota counties in response to strong demand. Drought conditions will continue to be monitored throughout the winter and spring.

A cost-share assistance application;

An estimate of project costs.
The state will fund the program to the extent funding is available. Priority for funding will be based on earliest date of application received.
