Unlocking Value in Low-Grade Wood: Building Supply Chains for Sustainable Forestry

AMRO Forestry runs this project to help private forest landowners carry out sustainable forest management and harvesting, and to build local markets for low-quality wood. It is funded by a USDA Advancing Markets for Producers (AMP) award and was formerly known as Sustainable Forestry for Climate-Smart Wood Products under USDA's Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities program.

AMRO helps landowners with timber sales that meet their goals. Landowners can also apply for help planning or carrying out other practices, such as tree planting, invasive or interfering brush management and forest thinning.

• Private forest landowners in New York and surrounding states.

• Forested parcels of 5 or more acres.

• Landowners interested in sustainable harvesting or regenerative forestry.

• You need a Farm and Tract number from your local FSA office and completed forms AD-1026 and AD-2047.

Incentives are customized for each property based on acreage, forest condition and management goals. According to AMRO's flyer, foregone-income payments for retaining high-quality trees average about $500 per acre.

Funding can also pay for professional foresters and Technical Service Providers, management plan development or updates, and help implementing regenerative forestry practices. Landowners commit to maintaining the managed forest condition for ten years. Payments are reported on a Form 1099.

1. Sign up on AMRO's landowner portal and complete the AMRO Forestry & USDA AMP Project Intake Survey.

2. Download the AMRO-AMP-1200 application form, complete it and email it to info@amroforestry.com.

3. Contact your local FSA office to get a Farm and Tract number and complete forms AD-1026 and AD-2047.

4. Email AMRO the subsidiary print information, map and certification from your FSA office. AMRO then handles the rest of onboarding.
