Reducing GHG Emissions and Improving Soil Carbon Sequestration Potential through High-Carbon Soil Amendment

Western Sugar Cooperative, a grower-owned sugar beet cooperative, uses USDA climate-smart commodities funding to pay its growers for adopting NRCS Conservation Practice Standard 336 (Soil Carbon Amendment). Western Sugar says 96% of the funds go directly to farmers.

Working with local land-grant universities, Western Sugar has developed Best Management Practices for the soil carbon amendment. It plans to expand use to more than 15,000 acres between 2023 and 2028 in Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, Wyoming and the Crow Tribe.
