The Amenance Grant

Hispanic Federation Puerto Rico

Closed December 31, 2023

In response to the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and María, in November 2017, Hispanic Federation announced the Amanece: Road to Recovery initiative as part of our UNIDOS Disaster Relief and Recovery Program to support recovery efforts led by non-profit organizations.

The goal of the Amanece initiative is to finance innovative projects that have a long-term vision of a just and sustainable recovery for the archipelago and its communities, with an emphasis on sustainability, self-sufficiency, and local collaboration and coordination.

Since its launch, the Amanece fund has provided 57 grants totaling $5.4 million to 40 local community-based, non-profit organizations responding to Hurricane Maria and subsequent disasters in the years since. Amanece grants empowered these organizations with the resources needed to execute long-term recovery initiatives focused on housing, agriculture, economic development, environment, renewable energy, and emergency preparedness, among others. Through Amanece, these non-profit organizations in Puerto Rico have demonstrated the fundamental role they have in the response and recovery of communities.

In July 2023, Hispanic Federation announced an additional $1 million in philanthropic funding for the Amanece initiative to distribute grants to local nonprofits in Puerto Rico that are advancing equitable and sustainable long-term recovery efforts across the archipelago and building stronger and more resilient communities to mitigate against the impacts of climate change.

The latest iteration of Amanece provided grants to 23 local, grassroots organizations that are leading projects that address climate change, community resilience, and economic development while also promoting equity, community self-sufficiency and collaboration for our archipelago and its communities.
