Offrange is an editorially independent media publication from Ambrook, a company building financial tools to help farmers and ranchers become more profitable and resilient.
Offrange publishes original news stories, features, and perspectives on issues facing modern agriculture, food production, and natural resources. Our focus is on issues that matter to farmers, other industry practitioners, and a curious readership that wants to learn more about agriculture.
Too often stories about farming rely exclusively on outside perspectives such as academics, advocates, and politicians. As such, every Offrange story should include perspectives from farmers and ranchers or other relevant practitioners, e.g., fishermen in a story about seafood, veterinarians in a story about livestock care, etc.
When possible, Offrange piece uses verified data and statistics to bolster our reporting, with adequate context for readers to understand what the numbers mean.
Offrange will cover local/regional stories, given at least one of these is true: 1) Something happening in this specific place is wholly remarkable and unique, or 2) What is happening in this place is part of a larger trend, and telling the local story can help paint a broader picture.
Our stories are all U.S.-based, or at least have a strong connection here.
Offrange strives for truth and accuracy without partisanship or political allegiances. At times our reporting may lead to results that displease segments of our diverse readership; these are the inevitable consequences of practicing ethical journalism.
Offrange’s reporting is often rooted in scientific discovery, grounded in facts that are generally agreed upon by the scientific community at large.
We will strive to avoid sensationalism and clickbait, not only in our reporting but in how stories are headlined and presented on social media and in our newsletter.
At times, Offrange will publish interesting Perspective pieces from diverse voices, on a variety of topics. We will strive to include a broad range of viewpoints over time, and never should it be interpreted that these views represent those of Offrange or its parent company.
We try to avoid Perspective pieces that debate the merits of a single individual or organization, where possible.
We will always strive for balanced coverage, and to include the views of all stakeholders in a story. Though “both sides journalism” runs the risk of creating false equivalencies, there is still merit in making sure all viewpoints are addressed.
Our stories can cover challenging topics like climate change and farmer mental health, but we also want to show the vast range of fascinating, unusual, and even fun developments happening in agriculture today.
Reporting on an issue does not signal any allegiance to the topics being covered.
We will avoid coverage of a particular company, organization, or individual if there is a working relationship with Ambrook, the company that funds Offrange. We strive at all times to maintain editorial independence, but sometimes the reality of doing business will inevitably influence coverage decisions.
That said, we will always strive for transparency, and will disclose any conflicts of interest with Offrange, its staff, or its freelance contributors.
All accepted stories go through a collaborative editorial process and are paid at competitive rates, based on the amount and type of work. Offrange editors are happy to work with writers on sourcing and finding useful data for a story when appropriate.
